Beyond the Uniform: Translating Military Service into Local Government Impact

When:  Sep 9, 2026 from 01:00 PM to 02:30 PM (ET)
Based on ICMA's guide for veterans entering the public sector, this session will provide advice and guidance for servicemembers seeking positions in local government.

This session examines the successful transition of military veterans into careers in local government, building on insights from ICMA’s Veterans Guide to Finding a Job in Local Government and the lived experiences of veterans currently serving in city and county roles. Through a candid panel discussion, participants will explore key aspects of the transition process, including navigating civilian hiring systems, translating military experience into public-sector roles, adapting to new workplace cultures, and rediscovering purpose through public service. Attendees will leave with practical strategies, actionable guidance, and a deeper understanding of how veterans’ skills and leadership enhance the effectiveness of local government organizations.
